Back when I was the Director of Photography for DC’s Funk Parade festival, I first heard Julie Outrage a decade ago and I knew then that she was different in the best of ways. She breaks all stereotypes–a black musician who is just as comfortable shouting out lyrics to a hard rock tune as she is crooning R&B, a woman guitarist shredding like Hendrix, and a songwriter who defies genres by blending and bending elements of jazz, groove, psychodelia, neo-soul, R&B and hard rock in her own work. And while her music takes you to and beyond the edge of what you might be accustomed, it is easy to follow and, despite her name, it is never outrageous.
This past Sunday, 16 October 2022, Julie Outrage played the main stage at the re-scheduled Adams Morgan Porchfest. She drew an overflowing crowd and kept them captive for the next 45 minutes or so. Here is how I saw it…
